Death Valley presents one of the most striking desert landscapes in the world. The Death Valley National Park, one of the largest in the US National Park system, lies in California and south-east of the Sierra Nevada Range. The Badwater basin in Death Valley, at 282 meters below sea level, is the lowest point in continental North America.

Before my visit to photograph Death Valley, I spent several days pouring over works by different photographers. I was looking to produce images different from what had already been done. As soon as I reached Death Valley, I realized that I hadn't seen many images that showed the effect of light on those striking landscapes. As a result, almost all of the images I shot were under dramatic lighting conditions. This often meant that I had to get out of my hotel very early in the morning, to catch the first light of the day. During the day, myself and my friend scouted around for locations so we could come back the next day early in the morning.
